Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Reviewed on 2008 May 26
The third Indiana Jones movie, having Indy again scrabbling to rescue another sacred artifact from Nazi hands. This time it’s the Holy Grail.
Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) discovers his father Henry Sr. (Sean Connery) is missing, leaving behind a book of clues pointing to the location of the Holy Grail. He falls in with Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody), who’s just as anxious to find the grail as he is.
Indy is ultimately reunited with his dad, who is even more of a thorn in his side than Willie (see Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), though at least Henry Sr. is competent. Indy inherited a lot of his dad’s skills at avoiding traps and dodging Nazis, but initially Daddy is too busy goading him and calling him “Junior” to appreciate this. You can“t imagine Indy not making it but at times you wonder if the men are just going to lose it with each other instead of escape.
I think this one was the funniest of the Indys, with the sense of humor and interesting tidbits of Indy’s background smoothing over the fact that we never feel like Indiana is in any real danger. As always, the special effects were top-notch and acting was good, with Alison Doody, an Irish actress, even doing a pretty good (to my Yankee ear) German accent.
